The Legacy of Dr. Charles E. Brimm
1924
Milestone: Dr. Charles E. Brimm is born, beginning a life dedicated to service, education, and trailblazing achievement in the medical field.
1955
Milestone: Graduates as one of the first Black medical students to earn an MD from the University of Ottawa. That same year, he opens his private medical practice in Camden, New Jersey, establishing himself as a foundational pillar of community care.
1978
Milestone: In partnership with Emmett Doerr, he founded CAMcare Health Corporation to provide both primary and mental health services. In 1985, CAMcare Community Mental Health Center became a separate entity, now known as South Jersey Behavioral Health Services. Through this work, the Charles E. Brimm Community Homes—sixteen supportive housing units—were developed in the neighborhood where he grew up.
1994
Milestone: After passionately advocating for advanced youth education in the early 1990s, the Camden Medical Arts High School officially opens its doors to inspire the next generation of diverse healthcare professionals. It is officially named the Dr. Charles E. Brimm Medical Arts High School.
1997
Milestone: After 42 years of independent practice, which he began in 1955, compassionate family practice in Camden, Dr. Brimm officially sells his historic medical practice to Cooper University Hospital.
2010
Milestone: Dr. Brimm passes away, leaving behind an indelible legacy of medical excellence, community leadership, and educational empowerment that the foundation continues to carry forward today.
